How to Tune Your Tuning Fork When It’s Out of Tune

Why Your Tuning Fork Might Be Out of Tune
Tuning forks are precision tools, but like all instruments, they can be affected by your environment. If you've noticed your fork sounds slightly different than usual, you're not imagining things.
Temperature shifts, humidity changes, and even seasonal transitions can subtly alter a fork’s frequency. This happens because the metal expands and contracts with climate changes — changing how it vibrates.
The good news? You can re-tune your forks at home using a few simple techniques, and I’ll walk you through exactly how.
What You’ll Need
To follow along, gather:
-
Your tuning fork(s)
-
A hex key (Allen wrench)
-
A tuning app like CarlTune, Cleartune, or TonalEnergy
-
A few elastic bands or hair ties (for unweighted forks)
Hex Key
Tuning App
Elastic Bands
How to Tune Weighted Tuning Forks
(128 Hz and 136.1 Hz forks from our set)
Weighted forks are the easiest to tune because you can adjust the position of the weights, which directly affects pitch.
Step-by-Step:
-
Measure the pitch
Open your tuner app and strike the fork. If your 128 Hz fork reads 133 Hz, it's too high. -
Loosen the weights
Use your hex key to gently loosen the screws on the weights. -
Slide the weights upward
Moving the weights up the prongs lowers the pitch. Moving them down raises it. -
Tighten them securely
Make sure the weights are snug — loose weights may cause buzzing or vibration. -
Test and repeat as needed
This is a fine-tuning process. Small shifts go a long way.
Tip: If you hear a buzzing sound when striking the fork, your weights may not be tightened enough.
How to Tune Unweighted Tuning Forks
(256 Hz and 384 Hz forks from our set)
Unweighted forks don’t have adjustable weights, so tuning them involves adding a bit of mass with elastic bands.
🛠 Step-by-Step:
-
Wrap elastic bands around the prongs
A regular hair tie works great. -
Slide bands up or down
-
Move upward to lower the pitch
-
Move downward to raise the pitch
-
-
Use your tuning app to test
Experiment until you reach the desired frequency. You’ll be surprised how effective this simple trick is!

Why Temperature Matters
In the tutorial, we recorded the fork at 79°F (26°C) — perfect conditions for accuracy. But you might notice tuning changes when:
-
Moving between seasons
-
Traveling to different climates
-
Your room temperature shifts drastically
In cooler temps, forks often vibrate at a slightly higher frequency. It’s subtle, but if you’re doing precision healing work, you’ll want to recalibrate regularly.
Our Most Tunable Tuning Fork Set
Whether you’re just starting or already offering sound healing sessions, we recommend our bestselling Resonance Tuning Fork Starter Set for its balance of quality, ease of use, and versatility.
